Human Services Credentials Overview

The Providers' Council Human Services Credentials are designed to develop and implement standards and competencies for Direct Support and Direct Service Professionals (DSPs) within the field of human services. Twelve core competency areas were defined by the Council's Professional Standards Board (PSB) in conjunction with the Council's Workforce Committee. Starting with nationally recognized standards, the 12 competencies best reflect the core training needs of DSPs entering the Massachusetts human services workforce.

The first Human Services credential is for Direct Support Professionals working in the DD/MR field and was released in 2005. The second Human Services credential for Direct Service Professionals in Child Welfare was released in April 2007. Additional Human Services credentials in Leadership & Frontline Supervision, Mental Health and Public Health: Substance Abuse & Addictions were released in August.  Tier 2 of the Credentials in Developmental Disabilities/Mental Retardation and Child Welfare are currently in development and should be released in the coming months.
